\u00abA new kind of university\u2026 where students could live and learn\u2026 and research really mattered\u2019 \u2013 this was the founding vision of Essex\u2019s first Vice-Chancellor Sir Albert Sloman. His commitment to research and education remains at the heart of our mission. Essex\u2019s architecture was designed to link social and educational space to encourage a sense of community.<\/p>\n

The University of Essex is a public research university in Essex, England. It was established in 1963 and the largest campus is located in Colchester, where most programmes and classes take place. There are two more campuses in Southend and in Loughton. In Southend students will be studying programmes from the School of Health and Social Care, Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies, and from Essex Business School. While in Loughton there is the East 15 Acting school, \u03bfne of the most prestigious and internationally respected conservatoires in the country where students gain the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue a career in the performing arts.<\/p>\n

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) in 2014 ranked Essex in the top twenty universities in the UK for the quality of its research and in the top five for social science. Essex is in the top 50 for social sciences and law in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018 by subject.<\/p>\n

  • Do your research carefully \u2013 check out university websites, as well as UCAS, so you get a real feel for the place.<\/li>\n
  • Consider the course content and not just its title \u2013 English at one university is not the same as English at another university.
